50 Years of Advancing Native Education

In 2019, NIEA celebrated its 50th Anniversary since our founding in 1969. To commemorate this important event, we developed “50 Years of Advancing Native Education” to document both the challenges and the successes that NIEA has experienced in the past 50 years as we have sought to improve educational opportunities for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian students.

As stated in the Leadership Message, “NIEA has forever changed the future of Native communities and students.” We have strengthened educational sovereignty, positively impacted federal legislation, supported indigenous language revitalization, and ensured that the trust responsibility is never forgotten.
