Honoring Our Native Veterans: Warriors in Uniform
NIEA proudly honors our Native veterans and those currently serving in the military. We recognize the sacrifices made by those who have gone before us and those who are still fighting to defend our lands. Our focus is to elevate these stories in classrooms using essential understandings and academic standards to support educators and students in learning about the history and present of Native peoples long standing military service. The collection of work, entitled Warriors in Uniform, honors our Native American veterans across Indian Country.
NIEA’s Warriors in Uniform programming brings together Native subject matter experts, curriculum writers, teachers, and community members who are committed to the mission of illuminating the experiences of our Native American veterans through primary and secondary sources. The story resources below are from our ANA grant funded, Illuminating the Contributions of Native American Veteran’s in Montana. This set of resources will also be shared through Montana’s Office of Public Instruction Indian Education for All platform. We are continuously expanding this body of resources so check back often for additional veterans’ stories and lessons.
NIEA proudly honors and uplifts all Native veterans across Indian Country. Thank you to each of the veterans who courageously shared their stories with us. We are forever grateful for your service to our country.

Resources
The instructional materials below are designed with an inquiry-base approach. While the grade bands are assigned based on the projected standards and age-appropriateness of the material, educators could find value in utilizing these outside of grade bands. We urge you to completely review the materials and video clips prior to using these in the classroom. These materials are also designed to uplift and teach cultural values and knowledge that our Native veterans gave permission to share. It is critical to respect the service and Native heritage storied by the Veterans and educators who curated the materials. We recommend that you read the resource Essential Understandings Regarding Montana Indians before engaging students in these lessons.
