Higher Education

Higher education represents one opportunity for future leaders to gain skills that can strengthen tribal nations. Through college, career, and technical education, post-secondary institutions can offerNative students the tools and experience to prepare themselves for the 21st century economy.

Congress has recognized the importance of higher education in Native communities and has moved to expand access to college and career education. Critical legislation that improves funding and resources available to students in rural and reservation areas include the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), the Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities Assistance Act of 1978, and the Carl D. Perkins Act of 1984.

NIEA is working to ensure any reauthorization of higher education legislation, including HEA and Perkins, supports and strengthens institutions that serve Native students. NIEA is also encouraging tribal and state partnerships that promote collaboration with Native-serving, non-tribal institutions on Native education issues and workforce needs.
