2010-05: NIEA 50th Anniversary Convention, 2019 Scheduled for Minnesota
WHEREAS, the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) was established in 1970 for the purpose of advocating, planning, and promoting the unique and special educational needs of American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians; and
WHEREAS, NIEA as the largest national Indian organization of American Indian, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiian educators, administrators, parents and students in the United States, provides a forum to discuss and act upon issues affecting the education of Indian and Native people; and
WHEREAS, In 1969, Rosemary Christensen organized a National Conference on Indian education as part of her work at the Midwest Regional Educational Laboratory (McREL) located in Minneapolis; and
WHEREAS, The planning committee members were primarily from the greater Minneapolis area and at the conclusion of this first conference the Minnesota group discussed the idea of a national organization of Indian educators; and
WHEREAS, The National Indian Education Association was incorporated in 1970 and the second convention held again in Minnesota; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the National Indian Education Association supports the 50th Anniversary Convention be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota site of the first convening of Indian education convention.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the National Indian Education Association establish a 50th anniversary commission made up of former presidents and others interested in developing activities surrounding this event.
