Returning to School Safely: State-by-State Guidance and Landscape

After months of lockdown due to the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), classes are scheduled to begin across much of the country in the coming weeks. Tribal nations and schools face difficult decisions to protect students as they resume education services and, if possible, reopen their doors to students. Whether a school operates under a virtual, hybrid, or in-person model, all students must have access to high-quality educational services and opportunities.

Effective guidance is essential to preventing the spread of COVID-19 through our classrooms, and ensuring equity in access to a high-quality education during the pandemic. Tribes and schools must have access to the resources necessary to create safe and healthy classrooms where our students can thrive.

Below, NIEA has collected guidance and resources from each state to support the safe reopening of classrooms in our schools and communities. We urge each school to develop a plan, in consultation with tribal nations, that addresses the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on our students, educators, families, nations, and communities.
